Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a painful and irritating skin condition which results in dry, itchy patches of skin. This can be immensely debilitating for anyone who suffers from it, affecting their wellbeing, and self confidence. Often, an attempt to soothe eczema with moisturisers, creams or ointments will be a temporary fix, or completely ineffective.

Moringa, and its power to undercut the throes of eczema is a primary motivation for our journey at Moringa Project.

Moringa oil has the ability to fight bacteria, soothe inflammation, moisturise, and protect. This allows the extract to be truly effective to salve rough, itchy skin, and prevent the recurrence of eczema. 

Antimicrobial

Millions of bacteria, and other microscopic organisms cover our skin’s surface, making up our skin microbiome. While this may sound scary, many of these organisms are required to ensure skin health and protect the skin barrier, similar to gut microbiota required for proper digestive health. Beneficial microorganisms can also prevent the growth of malignant or harmful microbes.

However, sometimes our skin microbiome can get out of balance.  Stress, or environmental factors such as pollution, and poor lifestyle habits such as a poor diet and smoking can cause harm to our skin barrier, affecting the presence of beneficial bacteria. This allows for the presence of harmful microbes to flourish, such as yeast, mould, and bacteria. When harmful microbes take over, it can lead your skin to become inflamed, causing eczema among other skin conditions.  

Moringa contains antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, with leaf and seed extracts shown to reduce the growth of several antibacterial resistant bacteria. Applying Moringa oil to inflamed skin helps to eliminate the harmful bacteria on the skin’s surface, reducing the likelihood of eczema recurrence. 

Soothe Inflammation

When you get eczema, your skin becomes swollen, red and itchy - eczema is a disease of inflammation. Reducing inflammation of affected areas will directly lower eczema occurrence, and should be considered over simply moisturising the area. 

Moringa oil has anti-inflammatory properties, from several bio-active compounds found in the oil (such as quercetin, zeatin, and ferulic acid). These plant extracts are effective at reducing swelling, and this is important, for inflammation is usually an instigator of various diseases (including eczema). 

Moisturise and Protect

Moringa oil contains high amounts of oleic acid, making it an excellent source of moisture and hydration for your skin, especially for dry skin types. Oleic acid is an Omega-9 fatty acid, which is involved in fighting bad cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. Oleic acid is readily found in dietary form from health-high fat foods (such as avocado and almonds). When applied to your skin, it easily penetrates the skin's surface, effectively replacing lost moisture.

Moringa oil is also an emollient, meaning it covers the skin in a thin layer to trap moisture, and protects against drying out.
